Sydney Sweeney said she understands "what it feels like to be underestimated, to have people define you before you've had a chance to define yourself" at Variety's Power of Women event on Wednesday, Oct. 29

Sweeney's Euphoria costar Sharon Stone presented her with an award at the event, which comes one week before Sweeney's new movie Christy hits theaters

"I know what it feels like to have to prove that you deserve to be here, to be seen, to be taken seriously," Sweeney said

Sydney Sweeney is alluding to her experiences of feeling judged in Hollywood.

"I'm not a fighter in the ring, but I recognize something of myself in [Christy Martin]," Sweeney, 28, said as she took the stage during Variety's Power of Women event at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Wednesday, Oct. 29 to accept an award presented to her by Sharon Stone.

The young actress, who portrays pro boxer Martin in her new movie Christy, said Martin's experiences as a gay woman in boxing who was victimized by her husband and trainer, rang true with her as she took on the role.

"I know what it feels like to be underestimated, to have people define you before you've had a chance to define yourself. I know what it feels like to have to prove that you deserve to be here, to be seen, to be taken seriously," Sweeney said. "But every one of us has our own fight, and Christy reminds us all that strength doesn't look loud sometimes, and sometimes it's just about getting back up again and again, no matter who's watching."

Sweeney announced that she would portray Martin, an International Boxing Hall of Fame member who competed professionally between 1989 and 2011, back in May 2024.

She has said she gained roughly 35 pounds for the role and noted that playing Martin — and meeting the real-life boxer — "taught me how to stand up for myself more and feel stronger in my personal life [and] my work life" following a special screening of the movie on Oct. 11.

Sweeney, who split from her longtime fiancé Jonathan Davino earlier this year and is now dating recording executive Scooter Braun, echoed her previous comments about portraying Martin as she accepted her honor at Variety's Women of Power event."Playing [Martin] taught me that surviving isn't the end of the story. It is the beginning of reclaiming it," she added in her speech. "And to every young girl out there, I hope that you know that your power is already within you. You don't have to wait for permission to be brave. You don't have to shrink yourself to make others comfortable. And if you fall, you can just get right back up." — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
